Preston Barracks: Patient Engagement for Stanford Medical Centre

We would like to inform you about potential changes to the way you access GP services in the future and ask for your feedback to help shape our way forward in making improvements to services.

You may be aware of the Preston Barracks development project on Lewes Road which is nearing completion. Part of the project has involved transforming the old army barracks into a new medical centre, among other local services for the community. You can find out more about the project on the Studio Egret West website.

The practice is proposing to bring together both Islingword Road and Cockcroft branch surgeries into a new, purpose-built medical centre at Preston Barracks.

This would involve the permanent closure of the Islingword Road and Cockcroft branch surgeries and patients who attend appointments at these sites would instead access services at the new medical centre located on Lewes Road. The main Stanford Medical Practice site at 175 Preston Road will be unaffected by changes outlined.

Under this proposal, you would not need to do anything and will remain registered at Stanford Medical Centre and continue to see the same staff as you do now.

About Preston Barracks

Preston Barracks Medical Centre is a modern healthcare facility that will enable us to increase our capacity and provide further services from one site. This includes access to First Contact Physiotherapists, Pharmacists and Mental Health Practitioners, as well as GPs and Nurses

The improved facilities at the site means our patients will benefit from better disabled accessibility, up-to-date services and modern, high-quality consulting rooms.

The new premises is a short walk from the Cockcroft branch and is approximately 2 miles from Islingword Road branch.

Your Feedback

We recognise that this proposal may cause concern for some patients, especially regarding the change of location. However, we believe that the improved facilities and broader range of services available in a purpose-built premises will be of significant benefit to our patients.

We are now asking for patients to complete a short questionnaire online and you can share your views through the Patient Participation Group meeting which is being held 23rd February at 1.30pm or remotely by a TEAMS invite. Please contact the surgery if you would like to join remotely. There is also a drop-in session between 4.30pm to 5.30pm on 25th February Meeting Room Stanford Medical Centre ( 175 Preston Road).

The survey is open until Monday 2nd March and we encourage all patients to share their views.

Frequently asked questions

Why is this happening?

At the moment it is a proposal we are exploring to see how the new premises at Preston Barracks can be utilised to provide patient care, as it offers a great opportunity to improve how we deliver services. This not a closure of GP services.

We recognise that for some patients the new location would be further away, and that matters. However, “access” is not only about distance. It is also about whether patients can physically get into the building and be seen safely. The current Islingword Road site sits on a steep hill and many appointments require patients to be seen upstairs via two flights of stairs. For older patients, those with disabilities, mobility problems, prams, or long-term conditions, this is a genuine barrier.

Islingword is not an accessible premises for either patients or staff and the building cannot be adapted to meet current guidelines for buildings.  The nurse’s room has no natural light, no rest room and there is no accessible toilet for staff or patients.

Cockcroft only has a GP room and we are only open mornings and during term time – which means outside of these times patients have to travel to other sites for appointments.

Is the decision already made?

No – the ICB want to hear from our patients and Allied Medical Practice patients. They will review the feedback given by all our patients with the wider health care provision requirements before deciding next steps.

Is there parking?

No, there is no direct parking at the site and very limited disabled parking but there is free parking for up to 2 hours in The Pavillion Centre very close by

Is there a pharmacy attached?

Yes there is planned to have one adjacent to the medical centre – but you do not have to use this to get your medication.  How you get your prescription medicines will not change.

What are the opening hours?

We will be open Monday to Friday 8.00- 6.30pm.  You don’t need to register for the new premises as your registration sits as Stanford Medical Centre

Who will I be able to see there?

It also offers more clinical space, which gives us scope to provide care more effectively and grow the wider team (for example, more nursing/HCA/phlebotomy capacity and additional clinics over time).

Also the supporting roles we have of first contact physiotherapist, social prescribers and other staff.

Is the building accessible for all patients?

The building is all on the ground floor and one level.   With disabled accessible toilets and a changing places facility. Having appropriate accessible facilities.

When will we know if the moves will go ahead?

After the engagement the ICB has internal processes it needs to go through.  We hope that we will know some time in April the outcome of the patient engagement and if the project is moving forward.

Do I have to stay registered with the practice?

No you don’t – if you decide that you do not want to remain registered with us for whatever reason then you are free to register at another local surgery.

Will the boundary/catchment area of the practice change

We are keeping our current boundary.

Will I be able to get an appointment like I do now?

Yes – you will still be able to phone the surgery to book appointments. If the proposal goes ahead, we will work hard to minimise the impact on patients who find travel difficult. That includes maintaining strong telephone and online access, ensuring face-to-face appointments remain available when clinically needed, and continuing home visits for those who cannot attend due to medical or significant mobility reasons.

Thank you again for raising your concerns. Please do take part in the engagement process —by following the link and completing the questionnaire. We will also publish clear practical information (routes, accessibility, and how services would run during any transition) if the proposal progresses.

Complete our onlinie questionnaire.
