What is the Electronic Prescription Service (EPS)?EPS is an NHS funded service in England. It gives you the chance to change how your GP sends your prescription to the healthcare professional you choose to get your medicines or appliances from.What does this mean for you?If you currently collect your repeat prescriptions from your GP you will not have to visit your GP practice to pick up your paper prescription. The practice provides the services:
If you have not been seen by a doctor for over three years and you are over 16, or for one year if you are over 75, you can ask for an appointment and the doctor will undertake all enquiries and examinations that appear appropriate at the time.
The practice runs a range of services for patients with conditions such as asthma, diabetes and ischaemic heart disease. Patients are encouraged to be actively involved in their own care and the practice offers advice and monitoring together with access to specialist services where appropriate. These conditions warrant an annual review with the nurses.
Arrangements can be made with the local authority for the safe disposal of needles and other sharps for diabetic patients.
The practice undertakes a wide range of minor surgery procedures. Your doctor will refer you if a procedure is considered necessary. Please note that for legal reasons, anyone under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
Our midwife Peggy Osborne is here at the surgery on Wednesday and Thursday of each week.

If you require any vaccinations relating to foreign travel you need to make an appointment with the practice nurse to discuss your travel arrangements. This will include which countries and areas within countries that you are visiting to determine what vaccinations are required.

It is important to make this initial appointment as early as possible - at least 6 weeks before you travel - as a second appointment will be required with the practice nurse to actually receive the vaccinations. These vaccines have to be ordered as they are not a stock vaccine. Your second appointment needs to be at least 2 weeks before you travel to allow the vaccines to work.
Some vaccinations are not offered on the NHS and you will have to be seen at the Brighton Travel Clinic. The nurse will advise you.

The SMC Community ENT (ear, nose and throat) clinic is an NHS service currently running at Stanford Medical Centre. It provides access to a limited number of specialist treatments that traditionally would have been seen in a hospital setting. It is staffed by ENT Hospital Specialists and General Practitioners with a Special Interest in ENT (GPwSI’s) for those living in Brighton & Hove and also Lewes and High Weald areas.
We provide access to ear micro suction, treatment for recurrent nose bleeds and assessment of patients with recurrent tonsillitis. Thresholds for referral to the Community ENT clinic and standards of care provided are the same as Hospital ENT clinics. Patients must be referred to the Community ENT clinic by their GP’s or hospital colleagues.
Microsuction involves a microscope and small suction machine to remove debris from the ear canal. This debris can block the ear (making it difficult to hear) or may become infected. In some patients washing out the ears (syringing)is not appropriate and therefore microsuction is an alternative treatment. The procedure is noisy and can occasionally cause some mild discomfort, but is a safe procedure which helps to remove wax blockages and can treat infections. More severe or recurrent ear infections will often benefit from microsuction to remove the infected debris.
Recurrent nosebleeds are treated at the clinic by simple chemical cauterisation of the bleeding point. This procedure can be uncomfortable so prior to the cauterisation local anaesthetic is often applied to the area. Cautery is usually a very quick procedure and it usually stops (or reduces the severity) of recurrent nosebleeds.

The SMC Community Vasectomy clinic is an NHS service currently running at Stanford Medical Centre. We provide a high quality, cost effective NHS vasectomy service in a primary care setting. The vasectomy procedure is available to all patients not just those of Stanford Medical Centre but for all those living within the Brighton & Hove area.
The vasectomy service is carried out by Dr Al Punja who is a member of the British Association of No Scalpel Vasectomists (BANSV).
If you are interested in having this vasectomy procedure please make an appointment with your normal GP and ask them to refer you via Choose and Book or by standard referral letter. Choose and Book is where your GP will offer you the choice of provider and may be able to give you an indication of waiting list time.
Here we aim to offer an appointment within 8 weeks of receiving your referral and the consultation and the procedure are carried out at separate appointments.
Vasectomy is the division of the vas deferens that carry a man's sperm from his testicles. Vasectomy prevents sperm from being added to the man's ejaculation fluid (semen); therefore, he can no longer make a woman pregnant. The sperm containing fluid that is blocked by vasectomy constitutes only 3% of a man's semen volume, therefore, a man will not notice any changes in his semen. Vasectomy is simply an effective, inexpensive, easy-to-perform method of contraception.
No-scalpel vasectomy is a safe, minimally invasive procedure that reduces vasectomy's already low complication rate. The NSV was developed in China by Dr. Shunqiang Li in 1974. Instead of cutting the scrotal skin, the skin is punctured and the vasectomy is delivered with two special instruments. Over 15 million men have undergone the NSV procedure worldwide since 1974. It is rapidly becoming the standard vasectomy technique in the United Kingdom.
